Description
This harness attachment grew from a very real situation with my own dogs & it involved stopping them from pulling on the lead. My dogs don’t often walk on leads, most of them are well trained, but 2 recent rescues came to me as adults, mostly untrained and as large breeds with a high prey drive; going out on leads was a challenge to say the least.
I came up with a full harness design to test but thought that bringing a full harness design to the pet market would be a big job to get everything right, so I decided to make the Hungry Harness “Don’t Back Out”! attachment instead, so it could be affordable yet still to the same high standards as all my other products, easy and quick to make and essentially a brilliant idea that you can attach to an existing dog harness.
Fitting
As with any product, it needs fitting properly. You must make sure that this is comfortable for your dog, especially male dogs. The loop must sit forward of the sheath and not interfere with it in any way. If your dog does not like it then please use some positive reward based training to help them accept it or discontinue use.
This harness attachment may fit to a harness or a collar. Please ask if you are unsure if it is compatible with your harness. We have looked at the following harnesses and think that they will be compatible:
Julius
Ruffwear
Perfect Fit
Fleece Y-front
… and most harnesses with a ring or lead attachment at the back or top. Not suitable for harnesses that already have a belly loop.
Step by Step process for fitting
- Have your dog in the stand position.
- Take the loop section of the attachment (the bit with the buckle) and attach it around their middle behind their last rib.
- For male dogs, place the strap to the front of their sheath, not over it or in any way uncomfortable for them, for female dogs, the same place which is behind their last rib in the crease in front of the knee.
- Make sure it is snug, not loose and not too tight, just tight enough to behave as we recommend.
- The top strap can now attach to your existing harness, our Marty Harness, or your dogs collar.
- Suitability with your dogs’ current harness depends on the top attachment configuration of your existing harness.
- Adjust the top strap so it does not flap about but remains flat on the top of their back. We have asked you for measurements here but if the strap is too long, you can cut the excess off and heath the end so it does not fray.
- As a luxury upgrade we have added the option for your to choose a padded sleeve.
Spec
A product made up of a back loop and a top strap made from 25mm polypropylene cushion webbing. It has a ring and a hook to enable securing to a harness or collar and a back loop to secure to the dogs rear quarters as per instructions. The purpose is to provide extra security to an existing harness or collar.
The full package
This harness attachment would work even better with a double ended lead such as your Police Dog Style Training Lead. You would balance the emphasis on whichever end of the lead you needed to at any given moment.
Also, our Marty Harness is ideal for this! A perfect threesome of products.
What should I expect from the Hungry Harness “Don’t Back Out”?
The Hungry Harness “Don’t Back Out”! is a loop and a strap. The loop goes around your dogs rear abdomen (comfortable for both male & female dogs) and the strap joins to your dogs existing harness or collar for added safety.
How should the Hungry Harness “Don’t Back Out”! behave?
It may slip round to the side and that is OK, as with any product, they can move. It’s up to you to fit it tight enough to be effective and not that tight that it’s uncomfortable for your dog. If your dogs lags behind you and you are using the back ring, coax them forward and resume your walk. This product works best with the dog in front or beside you.
Why might the Hungry Harness “Don’t Back Out”! not work?
It might be that your dog just doesn’t fancy something touching that part of their body and it might feel odd to them when they have it fitted. If you have your lead fitted to the ring on the top it might be that your dog doesn’t like the feel of something in that area while they are trying to pull. It might also be however that the strap works as it did with my dogs and stops them from pulling straight away.
You should also be aware that incorrectly fitted products will never work as the designer intended.
How do I measure to get full effectiveness of this product?
Here is a diagram to show you exactly where to measure on your dog. These 2 measurements go on your order and enable us to make sure it fits properly and you also have an adjustment to make sure its extra snug.
For male dogs: this measurement is just in front of their sheath
For female dogs: measure as per move diagram
Disclaimer
- adds security when fitted properly to an existing harness*
- may also give more control with dogs who pull on the lead when used properly**
* ‘Fitted properly’ means tight enough too be effective and not too tight that it is uncomfortable for your dog.
** If you attach your lead to the back ring, you may see the same results I did! Happy days if your dogs stops pulling.
