What’s the Best Recall Training Lead?
Our long dog training leads are available in various lengths, and the most popular by far are the 5 &10-metre leads. These lengths are perfect for recall training, giving your dog the freedom to roam while ensuring you can still call them back with confidence.
- 5 Metres: Suitable for smaller dogs or beginners in recall training. Provides more freedom than a standard lead but still maintains close control. Ideal for smaller spaces like gardens.
- 10 Metres: The best length for practicing reliable recall. It provides a good balance of freedom while still keeping your dog under control in larger areas.
- 20 Metres: Great for more advanced recall training, allowing your dog to explore a bit further but still giving you the security to manage any sudden distractions. Also excellent for dogs who are not allowed off-lead.
- 40-50 Metres: Custom option (please contact me). Perfect for wide-open spaces like the beach or large fields. These lengths give your dog ample room to roam while remaining safe and controlled.
Top Tips for Using Long Dog Leads:
- Always use with a well-fitted harness: Never attach a long lead to a head collar as this could cause injury. Harnesses provide better distribution of pressure and help prevent the dog from stepping over the lead.
- Technique #1: Hold the lead where you want the length to be, allowing the rest to trail behind on the floor. As you walk, adjust the length by letting out or gathering up the lead.
- Technique #2: Similar to horse lunging, you can wind the lead up in your hand and adjust as needed. For dogs prone to pulling or lunging, this technique provides better control.
- Avoid Tangling: If using a long lead in areas with trees or obstacles, opt for lengths under 10 metres to avoid tangling.
- Training in Public: Long lines are ideal for working on recall in public places. It gives your dog the experience of being off-lead while still maintaining the safety of a leash.
Why is a Long Line Better than a Retractable Lead?
Unlike retractable leads, which can cause burns and injuries to both dog and owner, long leads provide more control and safety during recall training. The longer the lead, the better your dog can practice recall in a real-world setting.
Materials and durability:
Our long leads are crafted from polypropylene cushion webbing, tested to withstand 400-450 kg, depending on the width of the lead (19mm or 25mm). This durability ensures the lead will last for many years when used and cared for properly. While no lead is chew-proof, proper care can extend its lifespan.
Care and Maintenance:
- Cleaning: Wash in warm, soapy water and air dry out of direct sunlight. Avoid harsh chemicals that could weaken the material.
- Metal Parts: Keep the trigger hooks and carabiners well-oiled to avoid rust, especially after exposure to rain or saltwater.
- What oil do I use?: Use WD40 or 3 in one oil.
- Daily Inspection: Check stitching and moving parts for signs of wear to ensure long-term use.

I recently bough both a long line lead and a riot lead. Both are exceptionally well made and are both light and sturdy. I added on the twist carabiner and it was well worth it. The design of the riot lead is excellent for heel work and the rubberised fabric used in this lead gives a really good grip. The long line has an excellent weight to it as i have tried others and they are either really strong but heavy or light but no strength where as this one is a perfect combination of both.

Thank you very much for your help with the lead. It is fantastic and wish I had done this for my boy earlier. He is really coming along and seems to be enjoying the new training for recall. We both have a long way to go, but every day after a hour long walk (so he can poop and pee all he needs before we start the new training). We do the recall training and so far I can let nearly half the lead out and he will return in a very happy way. I think even tho he is a Sighthound he enjoys learning new things and needs a job to do

The Truth is I found out about this company by chance when looking for a strong lead which was a little longer than your average national pet shop superstore lead.With two dogs to look after of differing sizes I.e.Mini Daschund and Mini English Bull Terrier I was sick of using the retractable leads after several burns and cuts to the back of my legs and hands with the standard 5m-8m ones.Puppies never go where you want them to.
So I had a look and rang a lady called Sarah asking for advice which was duly given in a friendly and not condescending way and a 15 m lead arrived with a couple of days…it was well made, nice and wide at 25mm with good quality clips,padded handle and a brilliant new to me but so simple and obvious”double up” which basically means if you start with a 7.5m lead you can immediately let it out to 15m(hence the double up) to give your pooch a nice long run and still be in control…and vice versa.
The lead was made of such good quality that if it gets wet no panic just pop it in the airing cupboard or on the washing the line and a few hours later you’re ready to take your dog about again after it’s rest and feed.
… after roughly 10 months I still use my Megs or (Sarah’s )and I have bought longer ones which never have let me down on quality.The main thing is they are well made,feel comfortable for me to be in control the dogs love them as they can roam or be at close quarters depending on where we are,I take them out every day,rain or shine twice daily and I have not noticed any wear whatsoever…which is the only downfall for Sarah!I don’t need to keep reordering snapped or chewed leads…despite my dogs best efforts at destruction.
At the risk of sounding boring…if you want a well made quality dog lead,with the added bonus of a simple loop double up ( video guide available which I needed because I’m a bit slow with new things)or a simple collar or harness then give these a try I’m sure you will be satisfied…so if you wanted a condensed review which I can’t stand but it would be…ordered,arrived promptly as described,well packed,well made quality product,size as described,excellent value for money……virtually everytime I see a new dog owner they invariably comment…”I could do with a lead like that,where did you get it” I have told them and a few weeks later they are out with one “thanks for telling me about them” …
I honestly don’t know Sarah and certainly don’t get any freebiesbut just speak as I find…if you want a quality product for your pooch try them out I’ve yet to have wasted any of my hard earned on Meg Heaths stuff,check out their website and you will see the range of stuff they make…raining today but my faithful red leads are waiting by the door…

Just to say thank you for your super training lead. This is our 14 week old Newf out for a 15 minute wood walk (limited time due to soft joints/ bones on heavy body). We love the quality. Very easy to wipe with wet cloth after. Easy to wind up (like a skipping rope). And also I forgot to say that you took good notice of the notes on the order which said ‘please don’t post out til 4th June’ (we were away).

Went for the 30 metre option for our pretty large Akita. She’s a strong dog when excited, and I have every confidence in this lead. Build quality is excellent. Colour is bright (opted for the fluorescent yellow), so less chance of tripping us over. Have placed order for a second shorter one, for smaller walks.

I bought a long line and a car boot tether from you a few weeks ago for my new collie rescue, Izzy. Both are perfect for the purpose. I particularly like the longline as it’s quiet and not frightening like an extending lead. It’s also easier to stay relaxed and thus not transfer my anxiety down the lead to her. The clips are really sturdy on both. Friends who’ve seen them have been most envious! Quality and value for money both excellent.

I LOVE my 10 foot lead. It’s so practical, double it up to 5 ft for safe road side walking & let it out to 10 foot for a bit more freedom to explore smells in the woods but safe in the knowledge that your pup will be coming home with you at the end of the walk! I bought this as a dog walker for a spaniel that is a definite flight risk when on a squirrel chase! It makes our walks so much easier. I’d bought my escape artist pup a harness from a well known pet store and nearly had my hand ripped to shreds. I’m surprised the pup wasn’t injured because the light weight lead got tangled round him and me.
Enough of that lead, the harness and lead I bought from you is of a much heavier weight and is easy to gather up as he roams and returns. The harness is easy to use and comfortable for him.

Always nice to share when you’ve found something good! Just bought a 5m lead from this company, their customer service is AWESOME. You can get a custom-built lead (length, width, colour, handle or not, clip on either end or not etc etc) for a really reasonable price. The 5m lead I got is great because it gives Zak a degree of freedom to sniff, express himself a bit and make choices, it’s SUPER-light in weight ( he’s less aware of it and it’s great if it needs attaching to his head collar) but seems really sturdy – he’s 26kg so we’ll discover it’s real strength when he turns himself into a whirling lunatic anytime! They are a small company and so if you have any queries, just drop Sarah a line and you’ll get a really quick, helpful reply!)

The lead is great as its strong but is a softer web material than rough nylon so does not burn your hands if you allow the lead to run through your hands. It is easy to use and well made. The red is bright so easy to see in darker conditions. Great flexibility in that you can choose length, colour etc and these are a good price.

Here is my position: I am a new puppy owner. I have a Cocker Spaniel and I live in a busy city. For me it is important to be able to trust very basic equipment like leads. I have purchased two so far with very reliable brass clutches. One is a great leather lead which looks great on Charlie – he is a Golden Cocker and this time of year he is in his element with all the leaves in the parks. My second is a training lead. The same brass clutch. Both leads are reliable and do the job. All this is important for me because me and Charlie are in our early days. Having had great difficulty finding a training line long enough and robust enough for our German Shepherd, we stumbled across this site through google. We have many fields around us, but they have insecure boundaries close to busy roads, making it quite risky to allow her off lead. She takes off like a bullet, really no chance of catching her if it comes to it.
The line was dispatched really quickly despite our chosen colour being out of stock initially, and on a next day service. We were kept updated throughout which was great.
As soon as we unpacked the line we knew we’d found what we were looking for. The material is comfortable to hold but really very robust, top workmanship, and the 50m length has meant near complete freedom for our dog. Can’t wait to see her running “free” on the beach 🙂

Dear Sarah, We are very happy with the lead as i have a Akita and can’t really let him off lead as he would go off hunting, but with the lead i can go into a field and let him have as much freedom as if he were off lead, and anyone with an Akita knows how important their exercise is to them would recommend it 100%.
