Product Description

Dog Training Lead

The dog training lead is ideal for safe on leash exercising of your dog as well as recall training (coming back when called). Our Dog Training Lead comes in lengths from 5 – 50 metres. They are made from quality, soft, durable webbing so will last a long time with proper use. If you anticipate your lead getting wet, try the brass trigger hooks? All leads come with handles.

Length Conversions

10-foot dog training lead is just over 3 metres

20-foot lead is just over 6 metres

A 30-foot dog leash is about 9 metres

40 feet of dog lead is just over 12 metres

and the mighty 50 feet, makes a 15-metre dog training lead

100 feet is still only 30.5 metres, so you can see why we work in metres.

How to understand the price of your Dog Training Lead

A 5 mt lead starts at £6.00. You then customise your dog lead by adding length, width, fittings etc thus adding the costs for those corresponding customisations adding to the final total not including postage.

What is the ‘double-up’ option?

The double up option is the same feature as our Double Up Dog Lead, it means that you can use the lead at half its length. So, for example, if you buy the 20-metre dog training lead, you can shorten it to 15 metres.

The handle becomes the halfway section of your doubled over lead, so if your lead has a handle, it will now be at ‘the dog end’.

Dog Training Lead Uses

Improve your dogs recall with one of our dog training leads. Ideal for general exercise too. Our dog training leads are soft on your hands, strong, affordable and come with a lifetime stitching guarantee. A well cared for Meg Heath product will last a number of years.

Remember, a tired dog is a happy dog.

Ideal training combinations

Why not try our dog walking harness the Martingale Dog Harness? An ideal training combo where safety and comfort are paramount.

Dog Collar – we recommend collars with shorter leads, but not for longer dog training leads. This is to eliminate neck injuries with dogs who pull to the end of your dog training lead at speed.

Recommended Lengths

10 metres – small dogs for general exercising and dog training such as recall training

20 metres – medium to large sized dogs, for general exercise and training the recall

30 metres and longer – personal preference for large space use and larger dogs

Brass Trigger hook – ideal for beach use, hanging lead outdoors, general heavy use and abuse

Nickel Trigger hook – ideal for when you know you are going to look after your training lead and keep it dry

What is the lead made of?

Medium thickness, 2-ply, soft polypropylene webbing.

Safety – We don’t recommend attaching this lead to a head collar. Depending on the length of the lead, a collar is more suitable however the longer your lead gets, we recommend a well-fitted harness to prevent injury from jolting if your dog runs to the end of the lead.

Handy Dog Training Tips that dog trainers don’t want you to know

What not to do

Here are few pointers you must never do whilst teaching your dog the recall. People all to often blame their dogs’ for not learning the rules, but it’s our responsibility to make sure we teach them in a way that they can easily learn.

  • Never ignore your dog when they come to you, always reward, even if it is a verbal “good boy/girl”.
  • Never repeat yourself. Ask yourself why your dog is ignoring you.
  • Never allow an untrained dog to repeat (practice) the behaviour of ignoring you/running away as this will be reinforcing.
  • And the biggest crime goes something like this:
    • “Dexter, lie down”
    • “oh look he’s sniffing”
    • “oh he’s not listening today”
    • “he has selective hearing!”
    • “this dog never listens to me”
    • and the excuses go on. Yes, these are excuses, not valid reasons, but is there a reason apart from the dog simply being untrained?

So, what should I be doing I hear you ask?

  • Always reward a recall, never scold.
  • Call once, maximum twice.
  • Use appropriate rewards, ones that your dog perceives as rewarding not that you chose.
  • Never assume a young puppy has a fully trained recall, it is usually just their dependence on you.
  • Do not ignore recalls when you didn’t ask for it, reward anyway ” oh, good boy!”
  • Beware of not letting your dog off the lead, use a long line to train them.
  • Don’t chase a dog that is running off, it soon becomes a game.
  • Always teach your dogs the minute they come home to you as new pets.
  • Commence training in a safe area on a long leash.
  • When your dog has returned to you, gain their full attention in a sit, then release, don’t let them leave in their time, it must be yours.
  • As the learning starts to sink in, reward less, so chose the better recalls, the faster ones for example.
  • Be sure a response follows a command (read the full article to learn the back-chaining method)
  • You may use a whistle, verbal or hand command or a combination of all.
  • Be aware of de-training by following a command with a punishment.

Love your leads. Really good quality and gentle on the hands. I have a large scent hound that really pulls so a lead has to be strong. Had my last one for a number of years and am only replacing it as my hound managed to splice it on the combine cutters!

    Hi Sarah,

just to say that my latest order for an extra long training line has already proved to be a great buy!

Several clients have asked where they too can get the item, so hopefully their orders will follow.

    Many Thanks

Excellent service and assistance with orders, prompt delivery too. Training lines have last well in past (for years!) so did not hesitate but come back when I needed more different lengths and sizes. Good value for money.
    Thanks

We are really happy with our purchases, we got a 30m long lead, a martingale harness and a collar. All are exceptionally well made and fit perfectly. The harness is a little work of art, combined with the long line, our rescue pointer has the illusion of freedom in complete safety while we get some basic training done. We will be buying all our future leads etc from you.

    Hi Sarah,

I’d bought my escape artist pup a harness from a well known pet store and nearly had my hand ripped to shreds. I’m surprised the pup wasn’t injured because the light weight lead got tangled round him and me.

Enough of that lead, the harness and lead I bought from you is of a much heavier weight and is easy to gather up as he roams and returns. The harness is easy to use and comfortable for him.

All in all, I am really pleased with my purchase and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend your products to other people.

    Thanks,
    Dorothy

    Hi Sarah
We are very happy with lead.
I was probably a bit optimistic buying a pale pink one.
Having said that I washed the lead and it washed up really well.
    Beautiful quality and well made.
    Kind regards

Mine is a 5 metre. I use a long line all the time on my dog & have tried cheaper versions that lack the quality of this line. It’s actually very good value for money because the quality lasts. It rinses up really well after a drag through the dirt. I will not go anywhere else for one of these & believe me, I’ve shopped around!

    Quality piece of kit.
I recommend the Brass fittings upgrade- essential for exercise on the Beach.
May well order another one, this time longer .
These are really useful, when you have a Houdini of a dog !

Always nice to share when you’ve found something good! Just bought a 5m lead from this company, their customer service is AWESOME. You can get a custom-built lead (length, width, colour, handle or not, clip on either end or not etc etc) for a really reasonable price. The 5m lead I got is great because it gives Zak a degree of freedom to sniff, express himself a bit and make choices, it’s SUPER-light in weight ( he’s less aware of it and it’s great if it needs attaching to his head collar) but seems really sturdy – he’s 26kg so we’ll discover it’s real strength when he turns himself into a whirling lunatic anytime! They are a small company and so if you have any queries, just drop Sarah a line and you’ll get a really quick, helpful reply!)

The lead is great as its strong but is a softer web material than rough nylon so does not burn your hands if you allow the lead to run through your hands. It is easy to use and well made. The red is bright so easy to see in darker conditions. Great flexibility in that you can choose length, colour etc and these are a good price.

Here is my position: I am a new puppy owner. I have a Cocker Spaniel and I live in a busy city. For me it is important to be able to trust very basic equipment like leads. I have purchased two so far with very reliable brass clutches. One is a great leather lead which looks great on Charlie – he is a Golden Cocker and this time of year he is in his element with all the leaves in the parks. My second is a training lead. The same brass clutch. Both leads are reliable and do the job. All this is important for me because me and Charlie are in our early days. Megheathdogleads are quality products which you need with new Cockers …
    All best…

Having had great difficulty finding a training line long enough and robust enough for our German Shepherd, we stumbled across this site through google. We have many fields around us, but they have insecure boundaries close to busy roads, making it quite risky to allow her off lead. She takes off like a bullet, really no chance of catching her if it comes to it.

The line was dispatched really quickly despite our chosen colour being out of stock initially, and on a next day service. We were kept updated throughout which was great.

As soon as we unpacked the line we knew we’d found what we were looking for. The material is comfortable to hold but really very robust, top workmanship, and the 50m length has meant near complete freedom for our dog. Can’t wait to see her running “free” on the beach 🙂

Thank you for the great service and product, we will certainly be recommending the site to other dog owners in the area!

Dear Sarah, A short note to say that we are really pleased with the workmanship and the quality of the materials used in the making of the training line. The strength of construction is essential when training a 15 mth old Boxer Dog! It is far superior to what we have purchased from shops previously and represents excellent value for money. An order for a spare dog training line is now on the way. Once again, many thanks, B Henderson

Dear Sarah, We are very happy with the lead as i have a Akita and can’t really let him off lead as he would go off hunting, but with the lead i can go into a field and let him have as much freedom as if he were off lead, and anyone with an Akita knows how important their exercise is to them would recommend it 100%. I ordered an extra long black dog training lead on line for my Lurcher puppy. Almost immediately I received an e-mail to say that if I would accept a navy one, it could be dispatched straight away. I accepted the navy and indeed it was dispatched immediately and received the next day. The product is excellent quality and very good value. I would definitely use this company again. Their communication and service are excellent. B James, Hertfordshire

I received my 40m and 10m dog training leads yesterday. Thank you very much – they are great quality and the material they are made from prevents them tangling up and going into knots which is great. Your service was excellent. Many thanks. Tara O’Connell
