Waterproof webbing, sometimes called Biothane (which is a brand name not a type) is a webbing with a rubbery feel relatively new to the pet market who’s main feature is, well, as it says, waterproof.

It has become popular because it is easy to dry, does not become sodden when wet, and doesn’t tangle like traditional polypropylene or nylon webbing.

It can be stitched together like regular dog leads, but you will usually find this type of waterproof webbing is fixed together by a process called double cap riveting. Specialised equipment and a certain level of skill is required to make this product and provides a certain level of durability and uniqueness in certain use scenarios.

This webbing has a rubbery yet soft feel and is sometimes called vegan leather or leather-like webbing. Its’ core is traditional webbing often nylon or polyester, coated in TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) or PVC (polyvinyl chloride). It is abrasion resistant, bacteria and water resistant and won’t stretch under normal use.

Is waterproof webbing strong?

Looking at the test results on the one we use, it is stronger than regular webbing at 5,700N, which equates to roughly 580kg of pulling force before it will break. So if the webbing breaks, it means your dog has chewed it! The same applies to our normal webbing, if it breaks then it’s probably been chewed. The strength comes from the inner webbing, not from the outer coating.

Other technical information:

  • REACH and ROHS certificates
  • UV resistant
  • Odour and bacteria resistant

Storage advice for waterproof webbing
