If you spend your days walking dogs, you’ll know it’s not just about leads, poo bags and muddy boots. It also comes with a running commentary from strangers, passers-by and fellow dog lovers. Whether it’s the same three phrases on repeat or the occasional curveball, dog walkers seem to attract chat wherever they go.

Most of the time, it’s friendly – people genuinely love dogs and can’t help but stop and ask questions. Sometimes it’s nosy, sometimes funny, and sometimes we’re biting our tongues not to give the sarcastic reply that really wants to come out. If you’ve ever juggled five leads while someone asks if they’re all yours, you’ll know the feeling!

Here are some of the most common things dog walkers get asked, with the honest thoughts running through our heads at the time. It’s all in good fun – we love what we do, even if we’ve heard these a hundred times before.

“It’s OK, he’s friendly”!

Ah yes — the famous last words just before someone’s off-lead dog barrels into your carefully managed group like a wrecking ball. Thanks for the heads up, but we’d really prefer a bit more space!

“You’ve got your hands full”!

You don’t say! It’s a mix of choreography and chaos, and somehow we make it look easy (ish). Yes, it’s a job. Yes, it’s on purpose!

“Are they all yours”?

As much as we’d love to have a pack this perfect at home… no. But we do love them like our own while they’re with us.

“How many have you got”?

Dog walkers everywhere instantly start counting with their eyes when they hear this. We know the number. We just can’t always say it without pointing.

“What breed is he/she”?

We get this daily — especially with the more unusual mixes! Sometimes we genuinely don’t know, so we just smile and say, “Unique!”

“He must eat a lot”!

The leads, the treat pouch, the cheerful chaos — we like to think it gives us away. Either that or we’re just very committed dog parents.

“Do you have a saddle for him”?

Classic. Every big dog owner has heard this at least once. Bonus points if it’s a Great Dane or a Malamute. We’re considering tiny jockey silks for next time.

“Look at the size of his feet”!

Puppy feet are a big talking point. If they’re massive, you just know someone’s going to comment. Yes, he is going to be the size of a small horse.

“Do you walk humans too”?

Now and again we get asked this by someone with a cheeky smile. Tempting! Though humans are far less likely to sit when asked.

So next time you spot someone out with a pack of pups, maybe hold back on the classic lines — chances are they’ve already heard them five times that morning!
