The History of Dog Leads

The history of dog leads, also known as leashes or leads, dates back thousands of years and has evolved alongside the relationship between humans and dogs. The primary purpose of a dog lead is to provide control and restraint over a dog while ensuring their safety and the safety of others. Let’s take a journey through the history of dog leads.

Ancient Times: In ancient times, humans and dogs formed a mutually beneficial partnership. Dogs assisted with hunting, guarding, and herding, while humans provided food and shelter. Dog leads during this era were likely simple ropes or cords made from natural materials like leather, fibers, or vines.

Ancient Egypt: The ancient Egyptians revered dogs and considered them sacred animals. They were often depicted in artwork and played important roles in various religious ceremonies. Dog leads in ancient Egypt were made from fine materials like gold, silver, or decorative textiles. These leads were more ornamental and symbolized the dog’s importance rather than serving a practical purpose.

Ancient Greece and Rome: In ancient Greece and Rome, dogs were widely used for hunting, herding, and protection. Dog leads were often made from leather or rope and were used primarily for control during these activities. Dogs were highly valued and sometimes even featured in elaborate artwork and sculptures with leads.

Medieval Europe: During the Middle Ages, dog leads became more commonplace among the nobility and upper classes. These leads were usually made from leather and adorned with metal embellishments. They were used for both control and fashion, reflecting the status of the owner.

Industrial Revolution: With the advent of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries, there was a significant shift in dog leads’ manufacturing and availability. The mass production of textiles and metals made dog leads more accessible to a wider range of people. Leads made from durable materials such as chain links, leather, or woven fabrics became popular.

Modern Era: In the 20th century, the concept of dog leads further evolved to focus on convenience and functionality. The introduction of synthetic materials like nylon and polyester revolutionized dog lead design. These materials offered increased durability, flexibility, and resistance to weather conditions.

Today, dog leads come in various types and designs to suit different purposes and dog sizes. Some common types include standard leads, retractable leads, harnesses with built-in leads, and specialized leads for specific activities like training, jogging, or hands-free walking.

Additionally, the advancement of technology has led to innovations such as LED leads for improved visibility during nighttime walks and GPS-enabled leads for tracking and monitoring dogs’ whereabouts.

In conclusion, the history of dog leads is a reflection of the evolving relationship between humans and dogs. From simple ropes to fashionable accessories to highly functional and specialized leads, dog leads have adapted to meet the needs and preferences of dog owners throughout history.

The History of Dog Collars

The history of dog collars parallels the long-standing relationship between humans and dogs. Dog collars have served various purposes throughout history, including identification, control, protection, and adornment. Let’s explore the fascinating history of dog collars:

Ancient Times: The use of dog collars can be traced back to ancient times. In ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Greece, and Rome, dogs were commonly domesticated and used for hunting, herding, and guarding. Collars during this era were often made from natural materials like leather or woven plant fibers and were primarily functional, allowing owners to attach a leash or handle for control.

Medieval Europe: During the Middle Ages, dog collars gained more prominence and were widely used among the nobility and working classes alike. Collars were typically made from leather and were adorned with metal plates, spikes, or studs as a form of protection and ornamentation. These collars often represented the social status of the dog’s owner.

17th to 19th Century: In the 17th century, dog collars became more standardized in design and function. Metal buckles or fasteners were introduced to secure the collar around the dog’s neck. During the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution brought advancements in manufacturing techniques and materials. Leather remained a popular choice, but fabric collars made from materials like canvas or webbing also became common.

Identification Collars: In the late 19th century, the concept of identification collars emerged. These collars were designed to display the dog’s name, address, or license information. The introduction of metal tags or engraved plates attached to the collar allowed for easy identification if a dog went missing or was found wandering.

Choke Chains and Training Collars: In the early 20th century, choke chains and training collars gained popularity as training tools. These collars were designed to apply gentle pressure or correction to the dog’s neck when necessary, helping to establish control and obedience during training sessions. However, their use has become a subject of debate in recent years, and more positive reinforcement training methods are now preferred by many dog owners.

Modern Era: In the modern era, dog collars have become more diverse in terms of materials, styles, and functionality. Leather, nylon, and synthetic materials are commonly used, offering durability and comfort. Adjustable collars with quick-release buckles or snap closures have become standard for easy application and removal. Additionally, specialized collars have been developed, such as martingale collars for dogs with narrow heads and wide necks, and breakaway collars for cats to prevent choking hazards.

Technology has also made its way into dog collars with the introduction of electronic or “e-collars” that use remote-controlled stimulation for training purposes. These collars allow owners to deliver mild vibrations or electrical impulses to their dogs as a form of reinforcement or correction.

In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on the well-being and comfort of dogs. As a result, collars designed with padded materials, ergonomic shapes, and reflective elements for visibility have gained popularity.

In conclusion, the history of dog collars reflects the evolving relationship between humans and dogs. From simple functional collars to fashionable and specialized designs, the purpose of dog collars has expanded to encompass identification, control, training, and safety while considering the comfort and welfare of our canine companions.

The Invention of the first Head Collar for dogs

The invention of the first head collar, also known as a head halter or head harness, is credited to Dr. Roger Mugford, a British animal psychologist and trainer. Dr. Mugford developed the head collar in the early 1980s as a training aid for dogs.

The idea behind the head collar was inspired by horse halters, which provide control and guidance by exerting gentle pressure on the horse’s head. Dr. Mugford sought to create a similar tool for dogs, allowing owners to have better control over their pets without the need for force or discomfort.

The head collar consists of two main components: a nose loop and a neck strap. The nose loop fits snugly around the dog’s muzzle, while the neck strap attaches behind the ears and rests at the base of the skull. The two components are connected, usually by a strap under the chin or across the back of the neck, forming a figure-eight shape.

When the dog pulls or moves in an undesirable direction, the head collar’s design causes the nose loop to gently redirect the dog’s attention and guide their movement. Unlike traditional collars or harnesses, which exert pressure on the dog’s chest or throat, the head collar works by controlling the direction of the dog’s head, influencing their body’s movement in a more natural and gentle way.

Upon its introduction, the head collar faced some controversy and resistance. Some dog owners and trainers expressed concerns about its potential discomfort or the negative associations it might create. However, when used correctly and introduced gradually, the head collar has proven to be an effective training tool for many dogs, particularly those prone to pulling, lunging, or displaying reactive behavior.

Over time, various brands and models of head collars have been developed, each with its own unique design and features. Some head collars incorporate additional safety measures, such as padding, adjustable straps, or connections to regular collars or harnesses for added security.

It’s worth noting that the head collar should always be used under the guidance of a professional dog trainer or behaviorist to ensure proper fit, adjustment, and training techniques. Improper use or fitting of a head collar can potentially cause discomfort, injury, or negative behavioral associations.

In summary, the first head collar was invented by Dr. Roger Mugford in the early 1980s as a training aid for dogs. Its design, inspired by horse halters, provides gentle control and guidance by redirecting the dog’s head movement. While initially met with some skepticism, the head collar has gained recognition as a useful tool when used correctly and with proper training techniques.

    Hi Sarah,

Just to give you an update on the lead that I bought from you at the beginning of the month.

I came up to see you with my daughter’s springer spaniel, Franky on the morning of 8th August, the one that doesn’t like headcollars of any description and pulled like a steam train. You fitted us out with a long lead that clips to his collar and then wraps around his body at the end of his ribs.

I messaged you that evening and sent a video of how he was doing, which was so pleasing. Well, he is doing brilliantly still and is now such a different dog to take for a walk, so yet again it’s a big thank you to you for sorting this for us!

I tried using messenger to give you an update today, but it wouldn’t let me add on to my previous message so hopefully this will reach you.

    Kind regards
    Janice L

I recently adopted a rescue dog and I wanted to ensure I got some good long lasting leads etc . My dog unfortunately has hip displaysia in one of his hips and is only 15 months so he’s not to be chasing balls and climbing and jumping very much so I knew he was going to be on a lead alot hence wanting a long lasting one. He’s a terrier breed and so strong walker when he wants to be especially with living in the country lots if scents about. When searching online i came across Megk9 and looked at what was available and read the reviews. I promptly ordered the long training lead for training and for him to swim in the sea etc as it gives him more freedom of movement than just being on a short lead all of the time. At the same time I ordered a stealth lead for if we go to a busy populated area he could not be so easily dognapped as you hear of it happening a lot since the demand for dogs went up. I also ordered the 2 metre purple lead as it is a bit longer and was also at a reduced price and this has a nice padded hand hold. Its always handy to have a spare. My dog didn’t like the harnesses in general. He especially didnt like it going over his head. So when I saw Sarah’s martingale harness I thought it would be ideal for him. No need for it to go over his head. It’s a great success with putting that on him and much better control of him when he meets people and cars he’s unfamiliar with. I bought the harness with the extra sheath covering to just be more comfortable . Lastly I bought the neoprene lined dog collar because his original was stiff and scratchy and he was always scratching at it as if it was irritating him. Now with Sarah’s Collar no scratching at all and the with the added neoprene lining it feels more comfortable.
I am so impressed with all of the items I’ve bought from Sarah and the workmanship and quality of materials that have gone in to all these products are outstanding as far as I’m concerned. Plus the speed of completing and dispatching were 2nd to none. Thankyou Sarah for the fabulous range you cover. I will be back to order again in the not too distant future and will recommend you to all of my family and friends with dogs.

I have purchased the 5m and 10m training leads. I have a dog that I don’t trust off lead. Having now these long leads gives my dog a sense of freedom, she still checks in with me which is great. The leads are lightweight despite the length but sturdy which gives me peace of mind.
Worth the import tax incurred in France.

Finally I have gotten round to leave a review on this page,
I initially was very inpatient about getting my hands on some anti-thief leads to protect my four pooches from been stolen, after having been followed by a vehicle whilst out walking my pooches early one morning and due to the increase of dog thief’s in our area it was obvious that they had intentions to take my pooches, luckily for me I was able to get of the main stretch of road and down side streets out of their view,
This panic me in to taking action to buy walking equipment to protect my pooches as much as possible, at the time Sarah was unable to met my request quick enough due to the demands for her products so I went looking elsewhere, and after a few searches I was unable to find anything that compared with what was on sale on this site, so back I came and emailed Sarah for advice and guidance on what to purchase to meet my needs,
Sarah was very understanding and even though I had tried elsewhere she went above and beyond to ensure I was able to purchase the right equipment for my needs, this included four antitheft leads an walking belt and super leash to go with that, overall I was just relieved to have an order placed.
Within an week Sarah had made and dispatch my order and I was totally impressed with the quality of her products and the standard of her craftmanship was second to none, topped of with fantastic customer service.
So much so that when I showed my friend who had purchase some antitheft leads from Germany which did not met her expectations , she asked me to place an order for her, which was done straight away, and again Sarah did not disappoint in her delivery and craftmanship with the order, to my friends great delight, however my friend had a issues with one of the tactical Caribbean clips which broke, when she informed Sarah straight away an refund was made,
Having use the leads and walking belt my confidence in walking my pooches improved and the equipment was very comfortable to use and soft to handle,
If I had to make any improvements, it would be due to ordering the 2 metres leads, I feel it could have done with a handle of some sort near the clip end to be able to grab hold of to bring my pet closer to me for crossing roads or walking by other dog walkers due to having reactive pooches, (this is obviously personal to how I walk) although I feel it would benefit others for built up areas as well.
After some use with the leads, whilst out early one morning I was stabbed by some of the wire that had come out through the lead, after informing Sarah and sending photographs, again the problem was solved by an replacement of her up-graded version of the lead, as she had obviously pre-empt possible problems herself, which can clearly be seen by her constantly up-dating and improving her products all the time and her site by the different version she has on offer.
Overall I would totally recommend this lady and her products to anyone and everyone.
    Many Thanks Sarah
    Great job
    Adele

    Hi Sarah

I bought a padded simple leader, I liked it so much, and so did Merlin (GSD) I bought another for Arwen (GSD) then became quite addicted and bought the dream Walker head collar combo. ‘Fantastic’. Ordinary lead and now about to purchase a training line.

Everything I have bought had been first class, the quality is excellent and really strong.
I have called Sarah a couple of times to ask specifics of an item and she has been interested and very helpful about my purchase.

    5 stars

    Hiya
My apologies for not sending photos sooner; do not know how the days manage to fly by. But perhaps that has something to do with your leads!!! They have definitely given me the confidence to take my two puppies anywhere; including on the paths outside our home next to the busy A16!!
The picture shows my husband using these with both; he does get a little tangled though!!! But they are brilliant; will not come undone, tough even though we sometimes have the maypole effect (they go round each other !) they feel extremely strong, as I said before; substantial!!!
The extra-long ones are really good for letting the pups sniff about and then when we walk to heel (would you believe they are getting quite good at this, do not have the maypole effect so much!!) they shorten to the perfect length for those narrow paths.
I use the long one with one of the longer leads threaded through to train them around the garden, do not get tangled with 2 then and can see which dog is where easily with colours. Have been training them around the garden and free walking round garden with them. We have a large pond and certain terrain which has worried me so this has allowed them to become familiar with the garden and makes me more confident.
All in all, they have given me the confidence to take my pups anywhere and know they will come to no harm.
    So thank you.
As well, I shall soon be getting in touch again as they have nearly grown out of their collars, would you believe!!!!
Thank you again, and sorry I have been so long sending pictures.
    Kindest regards
    Lynne

Just what we were looking for, for walking Missy on the long mynd hills. She likes to play but doesn’t realize the sheep think she is chasing them. Now she can only get as far as we want her to. Have just ordered another one.

I can thoroughly recommend Meg Heath. I have purchased many of these (I sometimes have four dogs at a time) over a considerable amount of years, they last for ages and ages. Two of my leads right now are being used for two dogs one aged 6 and one 7. They were previously used for two other dogs and the years of use total up to 16 years so far! I always have the brass fitments and these products have always looked like new. They are beautifully hand made and very robust. The most recent one I have purchased was 5 months ago for a new addition so I know the quality is still the same. [Taken from Trustpilot].

All received, ordered Monday received today. Beyond our expectations, Sarah Gleave colour is just gorgeous and quality exquisite. Plenty of growth in harnesses and collars should last them for a long time. Once again thank you we are absolutely thrilled with them and Meena and Lulu say woof woof for the treats.

  16. Angie McGuckin says:

Nothing is too much trouble for Sarah, and I was trouble lol. I picked a material she normally doesn’t work with and even told me she wasn’t happy with them when other companies would just ship them out. Sarah goes above and beyond and is patient and very understanding of people’s wants and needs. Very satisfied customer.

  17. Joanna Hunt says:

I’m so happy with my products. I couldn’t find what I wanted so after an in-depth conversation I had bespoke ones made. They are strong with the most amazing carabiners that are so secure. There is no danger of them coming undone whilst on a walk and because they swivel less chance of my boys getting tangled. I can use them with my walking belt or in the usual way. The padded handles are super soft and comfortable. They were made and delivered in two days. Highly recommended.

  18. Claire Thornton says:

I LOVE my 10-foot lead. It’s so practical, double it up to 5 ft for safe roadside walking & let it out to 10 foot for a bit more freedom to explore smells in the woods but safe in the knowledge that your pup will be coming home with you at the end of the walk! I bought this as a dog walker for a spaniel that is a definite flight risk when on a squirrel chase! It makes our walks so much easier. It’s a lovely colour too, I have a 20-foot blue lead but I prefer the colour of this one.

    Thanks so much

I asked Sarah to custom make me a walking belt to which dog leads could be attached to enable me to walk my dogs safely, whilst not straining my hands and wrists which are very arthritic. The brief was quite loose, as Sarah is the expert and knew exactly what was needed. I’m sure she must have had her doubts though! The belt and leads that she came up with are perfect, and I would highly recommend anyone with who has difficulties keeping hold of energetic dogs on the lead to seek out her advice. Thank you Sarah. I’ve bought several items from ‘Meg Heath’ – 2 car boot safety leads, a 10m long line, a custom-made collar and 2 custom-made double-ended carabiner training leads! The carabiner ones have been my most important purchase. I now have absolute confidence that my dog is completely safe if we’re walking by a road, following a nightmare with a previous ‘shop-bought’ one. Communication was brilliant with the custom-made orders – I got exactly what I wanted! Everything I’ve bought has been made to a very high standard, fab quality and very quickly delivered! Highly recommended!!

  21. Kathryn Smith-Verrall says:

I bought 2 car boot safety restraints from here to try and stop my dogs jumping out of the back of the estate, but at the same time keeping them safe whilst I was driving. My rescue GSD being the worst culprit for jumping out as soon as the boot starts to open, this way I know she is safe and will not run off and be scared as she is very nervous and not good around strangers.
The quality is great and well worth the money. Both dogs, the GSD and black Lab have room to move around with the leads clipped onto their harnesses, they sit up, lie down even get up to bark at passing cyclists when we are parked. Sorry cyclists but they are only protecting their space.

  22. Ali Vandervelde says:

We purchased two boot safety restraints for our lively black labs. Previously we would have to be very careful when opening the boot – as our labs would be very eager to jump out! With our new safety leads, we can open the boot with the knowledge that they are not going to come to any danger. They can still lay down and relax in the boot – as the leads are long enough not to restrict their movement. Excellent quality too!
